PROPOSAL FOR BBS-USA:
BBS -- Users and Sysops Association
Would you be interested in joining an association to promote and protect
Bulletin Board Systems (BBS)? The "hosts" of GEnie's BBS RoundTable are
prepared to provide as much as $500 in seed capital to start a non-
profit association with these goals and activities:
1. Low-cost legal defense for member users and sysops who subscribe to
and follow an appropriate code of BBS ethics.
2. Washington lobbying to support the interests and needs of the BBS
community.
3. Publication of a quarterly or monthly online-only newsletter for BBS
users and sysops.
Here is a possible allocation of funds:
-- 50% reserved for legal defense fund and Washington lobbying
-- 50% used to pay for member-submitted (published) newsletter articles
BBS-USA membership would cost $10 for users and sysops (free AND
commercial systems). Users would be encouraged to pay the membership fee
for their "favorite" sysop (free BBS systems only). All user and sysop
members would be required to sign the association's code of BBS ethics.
The first newsletter would include free articles from interested users
and sysops, and could be posted on any BBS or commercial online service.
The second newsletter would use half of the $500 seed capital to pay for
as many as 10 articles. Newsletters #2 and higher could be posted ONLY
on BBS systems and online services whose sysops are members of the
association. Each newsletter would include a list of BBS whose sysops
are members of the association.
If you are interested in BBS-USA, please post your comments in GEnie's
BBS RoundTable Bulletin Board, CATEGORY #1, Topic #6. Please promise to
write a free article for the first newsletter, or to help draft the code
of ethics and/or association charter. If you are willing to provide
deeply discounted legal or lobbying services, let us know.
We invite support and participation from SIG/RoundTable Hosts from other
national online services. Additional locations for comment -- on other
services -- will be announced in updates of this file.
Please also distribute this small file to every BBS you use! If interest
is significant, this proposal will be formalized by March 30, 1987.
Thanks!
Your Hosts
